My name is Dr. Anirban Maitra and I am respiratory paediatrician in Manchester, United Kingdom. Welcome to my website where you would find information on common respiratory problems in childhood and how are they treated. Respiratory problems in children are widely prevalent making it the most important reason for parents consulting a medical professional and I feel that the respiratory needs of children are often unmet. In an attempt to address this issue, I have attempted to put forward some relevant information about these common and often distressing medical problems.
I have often been asked as to whether cough is good or bad for the person. Cough is a reflex action to clear the airways from mucus and other trapped irritants (like dust ad smoke). In itself, it is distressing, both for the child and their parents and carers, but I consider them beneficial to the body as it helps clearing the chest.
Read MoreCroup is a common childhood medical condition that results in the swelling of the voice box (larynx), the windpipe (trachea) and the airways to the lungs (the bronchi). Children develop a characteristic barking cough and a harsh sound when breathing in (stridor). They may also developed a muffled and hoarse voice and breathing difficulties in severe cases.
Read MoreAsthma is a long-term condition that affects your airways (bronchus - the tubes that carry air in and out of our lungs). The asthmatic airways are somewhat ‘sensitive’ and ‘inflamed’ and ready to react to a variety of stimuli (also known as triggers) when they come in contact. These triggers may be allergic or non allergic in nature.
Read MoreTuberculosis (TB) is caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that most often infects the lungs although it may affect any other body organ. TB is spread from person to person through the air and is preventable. When patients with TB involving their lungs cough, sneeze or spit, they propel the TB germs (microscopic droplets) into the air.
Read MorePneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs (alveoli) in one or both lungs. Lungs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing a number of symptoms like cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A large variety of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses and fungi) and chemicals (like oil) can cause pneumonia.
Read MoreWheezing a common childhood respiratory symptom . The British Thoracic Society describe wheezing as ‘a continuous high-pitched musical sound coming from the chest’. It is a high pitched squeaky sound that comes deep down from the chest but may often be confused with sounds originating from the nose (snoring).
Read MoreDr Maitra listened to me and my husband’s concerns about our 2 year olds ongoing health issues. He allowed us time to talk, he listened and reassured and rearranged for tests to find the cause. He was a very positive chap. He helped to heal our daughter and the effects benefitted our family life. My husband and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr Maitra, a lovely caring man who will listen without rushing you.
Beatrix was referred to Dr Maitra due to persistent cough. He was very thorough regarding all of Beatrix’s complex history due to being very premature. Dr Maitra listened carefully to our concerns and the various chain of events. Whilst he was honest regarding the various possible diagnosis for Beatrix, he was also incredibly reassuring about his opinion based on his experience. Whilst examining Beatrix, he was gentle and approachable and made the various tests fun and engaging for a 5 year old. Dr Maitra ordered a number of tests for Beatrix to ensure he had the complete full picture for diagnosis and during the follow up appointment he explained the various medical terminology fully and was incredibly patient with all of our questions and paid a lot of attention to detail. He seemed to genuinely care about our daughter and was very approachable. I would absolutely recommend him to friends and family as was very knowledgeable and took time to hear our concerns.
In a nutshell excellent! I was at my wits end in getting the correct treatment for my daughter. Dr Maitra is a Godsend. He allayed my fears and taught me how to treat her correctly when no one else would. In 2 months my daughter was running around and playing as should when prior to this she had been unwell for 12 months by just being passed from pillar to post. I would definitely recommend Dr Maitra to friends and family, I have and they are a patient as well.
